Renal denervation is a minimally invasive treatment for high blood pressure that hasn't responded to medication. Using ultrasound energy delivered through a small catheter, overactive nerves near the kidney arteries are calmed, helping lower blood pressure.

Overview
Renal denervation treats high blood pressure that stays elevated despite medication. Overactive nerves running along the kidney arteries drive constant sympathetic signaling, and calming them lowers pressure around the clock.
Ultrasound energy is delivered through a catheter placed from the groin, treating the nerves without leaving an implant behind.

What to expect, step by step
Arrival and preparation
You check in with a coordinator, change into a gown, and meet your nurse. Vitals are taken, an IV is started if needed, and your care team reviews the plan and answers questions with your caregiver present.
Access and mapping
A catheter is advanced from the groin to each renal artery and imaging confirms anatomy and vessel size.
Ultrasound energy delivery
Short bursts of ultrasound energy are applied circumferentially while a cooling balloon protects the artery lining.
Recovery suite
You rest in a private recovery bay while your nurse monitors vitals and comfort. Written instructions are reviewed with you and your caregiver before discharge.
Home the same day
A caregiver drives you home. A member of our team calls the next business day to check on you and confirm your follow-up appointment.
Recovery
Lie flat for two to four hours to protect the groin site, then walk with assistance before discharge.
Continue current medications. Blood pressure is reassessed at intervals and medications are reduced only under supervision.
Risks and what we watch for

- Bleeding, bruising, or soreness at the access site or incision
- Infection, which is why sterile technique and, when indicated, antibiotics are used
- Reaction to sedation, anesthesia, or contrast dye, monitored continuously by your anesthesia provider
- Incomplete relief of symptoms, or symptoms that return over time
- The need for additional treatment, imaging, or a different procedure
- Rarely, a complication serious enough to require a higher level of care than an outpatient setting provides
